Job Description:

  • AFAO leads efforts to end HIV transmission in Australia, Asia and the Pacific
  • Vibrant team environment, walking distance from Central Station
  • Competitive NFP salary packaging, possible relocation package available

The Organisation

AFAO is Australia’s national peak community-controlled HIV organisation. AFAO works to end HIV transmission and reduce its impact on communities in Australia and, also, in Asia and the Pacific through an eight country multi-country grant funded by the Global Fund for AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis.

The member organisations represent the diverse communities most affected by HIV – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities sex workers, people who inject drugs and people with HIV as well as state-based members in each state and territory.

AFAO’s close connection with communities, provides rapid intelligence on changes in the HIV epidemic, allowing the organisation to respond quickly, and to act as a trusted communication channel to government, multi-lateral funders, research and clinical partners.

The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Digital Campaigns, this role will support concurrent projects to ensure HIV related issues of relevance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are more meaningfully integrated into Australia’s HIV response. Specifically you will
  • Develop and implement projects in partnership with Anwernekenhe National HIV Alliance (ANA) and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partner organisations
  • Project manage and develop national HIV education resources for Indigenous communities
  • Support Indigenous project workers at AIDS Councils and other AFAO member organisations
  • Remain up to date on the latest research and commentary on HIV and public health issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to inform programming across AFAO’s membership.

Job Requirements:

Ideally, the successful candidate will have strong project coordination skills, combined with an understanding of and commitment to people most affected by HIV. You will also have connections to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Additionally you have:
  • A proven track record of community work, including with Indigenous people
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with various stakeholders
  • Ability to work well both within a team environment and autonomously
  • The capacity to manage concurrent projects and meet deadlines
  • Attention to detail
To be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement of this role under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).

If you are passionate about improving sexual health within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, please submit a resume and cover letter responding to the skills required above or contact Lisa Morell on 02 8243 0570 if you have any specific questions.
