Job Description:

Legal Aid NSW is the largest legal aid agency in Australia, comprising of a Central Sydney office and 25 regional offices in metropolitan and regional centres across NSW and a number of specialist services and advice clinics. Working at Legal Aid NSW provides the opportunity to support people with disabilities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, women and children, Indigenous people and people with mental illness who may experience difficulties when enforcing and defending their rights.


The Legal Officer Grade IV contributes to the leadership and management of the specialist Human Rights team in the Civil Law Division of Legal Aid NSW. The Human Rights team conducts public interest litigation, supports the Civil Law Division's practice in key areas of human rights law and contributes to Legal Aid NSW's law reform and strategic advocacy projects. The role involves internal collaboration with other Civil Law specialist services, the Criminal Law Division and the Strategic Law Reform Unit, as well as partnership and engagement with external stakeholders (e.g. community legal centres and other NSW government agencies).
In particular, this role also requires:
  • Managing and conducting a high-volume workload and meeting tight deadlines;
  • Attending and addressing key stakeholder meetings to identify service delivery needs and strategic opportunities for collaboration;
  • Supervising and supporting staff in the Human Rights team and other generalist lawyers undertaking human rights work in the Civil Law Division;
  • Implementing regular supervision and applying file management procedures;
  • Contributing to Team Plans and implementing strategic priorities to achieve outcomes for disadvantaged communities;
  • Working with the Grade V Solicitor to manage, scope, implement and evaluate strategic advocacy projects.

Job Requirements:


The successful applicant will be someone with:
  • Expertise in intentional torts, discrimination, privacy law and/or administrative law;
  • Experience in strategic advocacy, project management and law reform; and
  • Experience in supervising staff.

• Ability to provide a valid Practising Certificate upon commencement
• Willingness to undertake a Criminal Record Check and/or working with Children Check
• Hold Australian or NZ citizenship or be an Australian Permanent Resident

The selection process will include a range of comparative assessment techniques to assist in determining capability and suitability for the role.
