About Museums and Collections

The University of Melbourne has endorsed a vision to unify its museums and collections under the umbrella of a Cultural Commons. A new Museums and Collections Department has been established to ensure coordination and alignment with University objectives. The Department is responsible for Buxton Contemporary, Science Gallery Melbourne (SGM), Ian Potter Museum of Art, Old Quadrangle Treasury, and the Grainger Museum.

The aim of the Department is to build a collaborative and flexible network around the University’s cultural assets so students, staff members local and global communities gain knowledge and understanding of contemporary and traditional cultures, scientific discovery and creative practice.

About the role

The Associate Director, Engagement has primary accountability for audience, stakeholder and public outcomes for the Museums and Collections Department. The role is further responsible for front of house across all museums and school’s education programs including the SGM Centre for STEM Excellence. The successful candidate will work alongside colleagues to develop strategic and annual planning, measurement and reporting and foster a culture of collegiality and innovation.

As a member of the Museums and Collections Leadership team, The Associate Director Engagement will work alongside colleagues to ensure an inclusive workplace and genuine collaboration with Australia’s First Peoples.

About you

The successful candidate will be a leader, experienced at working in complex environments and managing multi-disciplinary staff and contractor teams. A strong communicator, you will present information in a clear and engaging manner for young adults. To be successful in this role, extensive experience in the delivery of multi-disciplinary programs that embed students, young people and the perspective of First People within engagement practice is essential.

You will also have:

  • Extensive experience and expertise as a Head of Engagement in a university or public venue
  • Highly developed influencing and negotiation skills and strong networks/relationships with national and international peers, stakeholders and colleagues within the tertiary sector and arts communities;

Demonstrated experience with school education and learning environments;

Please note: The Associate Director, Engagement role will commence in May 2021
