Job Description:

The Opportunity

As the key government contact within a local area, Government Engagement Co-ordinators generally live within an Indigenous community and work closely with community members and stakeholders. The main feature of the Regional Network going forward will be a focus on maximising the social and economic impact of policies and programs. Government Engagement Co-ordinators will play a key leadership role in working with a wide range of community, private sector and government stakeholders to develop and implement place-based solutions that address local issues.

The role builds on opportunities for collaboration and joint problem solving and seeks to establish a more integrated approach to service delivery within a local region. In order to be effective the role must build productive relationships within the community as well as across PM&C, other Commonwealth, state and local governments, the private sector and service providers. The role maintains a detailed understanding of the range of investment, including through government programs and services, in communities within a local region. There will be an emphasis on developing capability in Indigenous communities, in their governance arrangements, and in the capacity of people to lead change.  Opportunities will be developed in a co-design framework, where the local community has a meaningful voice in determining the priorities for action, including timeframes.

The role supervises, mentors and seeks development opportunities for other community development staff who also work within the community. The role is a member of the executive leadership team in the region and is expected to contribute productively to strategic directions and change management. The Government Engagement Co-ordinator reports directly to a Director in their local Regional Office.

The role requires a flexible and adaptive mind-set with Government Engagement Co-ordinators deployed from time to time to different communities to meet regional priorities. Ability to quickly establish relationships and get across different community contexts is important.

Our Ideal Candidates:

You will be results-oriented and possess strong engagement and communication skills. You will have experience in social and/or economic development and have an understanding of working in place (location). You will also understand the life cycle of development and possess the ability to inform and build capacity in community about impact-based approaches and evidence. You will be able to maintain a strong understanding of local community needs and of the services provided locally by government, non-government organisations and other investments.

You will be expected to work responsively and in partnership with communities, other government agencies and service providers to broker solutions that are tailored to local needs. You will have the ability to negotiate project goals and performance outcomes that target community needs and will monitor the performance of service providers and discuss and resolve local, on ground issues associated with delivery of quality services. You will be flexible, possess good judgement and political nous. You will know how to identify risk and be able to manage and escalate issues. You will demonstrate proactive leadership that provides staff with tools and expectations to deliver high quality, client focused outcomes and provide constructive management to staff, focusing on capability development, team building and talent management. You will be expected to uphold the APS Values and Code of Conduct and know what it means to be an APS employee.
