Communications Specialist


Job Description:

The Opportunity

As a Communication Specialist you will provide strategic communications advice and support to a wide range of areas across the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Life in the Communications Branch is dynamic, fast-paced and varied. You will be part of a team that advises on best practice communication for both internal and external audiences, while working collaboratively across the branch to leverage expertise and deliver outcomes. One week you could be working with our team of designers, website developers and social media experts to deliver digital solutions or develop content plans to target specific audiences, the next you might develop media strategies in partnership with our media team or work on a video with our digital content team. There is also a range of business as usual work that the Communications Branch supports.

You will assist with some of the operational demands of the Department or the National Indigenous Australians Agency anything from writing articles for external websites, managing branding enquiries and assisting policy areas with communication products or content.

In particular we are currently looking for people who are passionate about providing communication support to the following areas of the portfolio: 

• Corporate communications 
Working closely with our Senior Executive and corporate areas to develop and implement communication strategies, you will also manage the Department’s corporate communication channels and advise on best practice communication for internal and external audiences.
• National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) communications.  The NIAA is part of the Prime Minister’s portfolio and is committed to improving the lives of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Working closely with all areas of the recently established NIAA, you will provide communications advice and support to help the Agency communicate about a wide range of policies and programs, create content for NIAA and Indigenous.gov.au channels and manage a diverse set of stakeholders. 

About the Communications Branch 

Our Branch supports the Prime Minister, our portfolio ministers, our Department and portfolio agencies with excellent strategic communications advice and responsive communications support. We believe in making a difference by making sure the Australian public is informed and engaged about the Australian Government programs and policies that affect them. We put people at the heart of our communications and are driven to use the most effective and innovative ways to communicate but we listen as much as we speak.

Our Ideal Candidate

You will have: 

• a relevant tertiary qualification or three years’ experience working in a media, communications or public relations role
• experience developing and implementing communication strategies and know how to target audiences with the right message at the right time through the right channels
• exceptional writing and communication skills
• strong stakeholder management and engagement skills
• the ability to work collaboratively, exercise good judgement and pay attention to detail
• the ability to meet deadlines, prioritise work and respond flexibly to changing priorities in a fast-pasted environment
• a willingness to travel and work outside of normal business hours if required.

This position is Identified which signifies that the role has a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This position has limited contact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and service providers, but is still required to have the capacity and willingness to further develop these skills. You will require capacity to attain cultural competency, including:
• understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
• ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
• willingness and commitment to continue to develop cultural competency
