The Opportunity

The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) advises the Minister for Indigenous Australians on whole-of-government priorities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This includes leading and coordinating the Australian Government’s policy development, program design and implementation and service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and building and maintaining effective relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, state and territory governments and other stakeholders.

The VICTAS Regional Team works closely with Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders to maximise the social and economic benefit of policies and programs for Indigenous Australians across Victoria and Tasmania. The overall purpose is to better harness investment while advancing the social and economic aspirations of Indigenous people, communities and enterprises across the region. With a focus on Southern Victoria, this opportunity involves stakeholder engagement, investment mapping and research and data analysis to inform place based initiatives across the Region.

Work will be targeted, measurable, evidence-based and specific to the needs, circumstances and aspirations of Indigenous people in the Region. A priority of the team is ensuring Indigenous Australians are included in the design and implementation of policy and programs that affect them. The role will combine strong local engagement with robust research and analysis to identify social and economic development opportunities, evaluate what is working in existing programs and make recommendations for change. Region-wide coordination will link relevant stakeholders and facilitate effective collaboration on sector opportunities. Economic planning, community profiling and a high level of strategic thinking will inform investment decisions for the region. The role involves potential travel across the VICTAS region.

The Adviser will flexibly support the team to achieve Regional priorities. This may include entering information into databases, drafting correspondence and reports, and coordinating Regional responses to requests for information. Grant administration, contract management and Provider performance assessments may form part of this role. The NIAA values a diverse and inclusive workplace. Our Ideal Candidate

You will be expected to support consistent co-design activities in community as needed, assess a range of data sources to identify community needs and maintain good stakeholder connections across communities and Program areas. You have good analytical and conceptual skills and the ability to present complex data in simple formats. You have the ability to identify risks and opportunities early, assess and resolve issues and work within a team to develop creative solutions in partnership with communities, the NIAA Regional Network and relevant Program areas.

To fill the role, we are looking for staff who can demonstrate the following competencies:

•  Strong analytical, research and problem solving skills
•   High level of cultural competency and understanding of the issues affecting Indigenous people, particularly in Victoria
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with a range of stakeholders from community to policy levels
• Ability to identify emerging opportunities or issues, and respond quickly to competing priorities as they emerge
•  Ability to analyse data from a range of sources and draw logical conclusions
•  Flexibility, good judgement and political nous
• A proactive approach towards getting things done and achieving results
•  Ability to work well in team environments, sharing knowledge and skills to deliver high quality, client-focused outcomes
•  Ability to provide constructive management to staff, where required, with a focus on capability development, team building and talent management
•  Ability to oversee and monitor the administrative activities of staff members, where required

The occupant of this position is considered an Officer under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and is required to exercise due diligence in complying with their obligations under this Act.
