Job Description:

The Role
The Department of Defence is a key supporter of the Commonwealth National Agreement on Closing the Gap with our commitments outlined in the Defence Reconciliation Action Plan (D-RAP) 2019-2022. The D-RAP includes 61 key actions to support Indigenous personnel, communities and businesses.

As a valued member of our Directorate, you will play a key role in supporting Joint Health Command through the coordination, design and delivery of health initiatives to advance the health outcomes of Australian Defence Force (ADF) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 

You will lead the promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health projects, showing awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within the ADF and wider community.

Key accountabilities:
  • Determine requirements in areas of Indigenous Health (eg. needs analysis) and present briefing packs accordingly;
  • Identify, develop, nurture and maintain strategic partnerships with key stakeholders and employ a collaborative approach to drive positive outcomes;
  • Lead the development and implementation of Indigenous Health initiatives across the Defence Health workforce (eg. Health promotion activities);
  • Support the ongoing evaluation of implementation and strategies to ensure continuous improvement and contribution towards Closing the Gap initiatives.
  • Strengthen policies and practices; and
  • Maintain culturally appropriate health education and information promoting health and wellbeing for Indigenous Australians across the ADF Health Workforce.
The current position is ongoing however we will be creating a merit pool to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions that become available within the next 12 months.

About our Team
The Directorate of Defence Health People Reform (DHPR) was established in June 2020 as part of the Operational Health Branch within Joint Health Command. The DHPR is responsible to the Commander Joint Health in their capacity as the Joint Workforce Sponsor. Our goal is to oversee the Defence health workforce (e.g. doctors, nurses, medics and dentist etc.) to meet Defence priorities and operational requirements. We work in collaboration with the Services (Navy, Army and Air Force), Joint Health Command and Defence People Group to drive reform in all areas relating to the Defence Health workforce.

Job Requirements:

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will possess the following personal attributes, skills and experience:
  • An understanding of, or the ability to develop an understanding of, the issues affecting health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
  • Demonstrated ability to sensitively communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, staff, leaders and stakeholders verbally and in writing;
  • Approaches work with foundations of risk management, gap analysis experience and is a solution broker;
  • Experience with policy design and implementation along with strong research and analytical skills;
  • Undertake project work that is very complex or sensitive in nature and operate under limited direction, requiring a significant degree of independence;
  • Influence change in areas of policy and practice; establish partnerships and provide strategic advice to senior management, contributing to and supporting the Government’s strategic objectives in improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; and
  • Be highly skilled in establishing and nurturing diverse relationships, especially across government and non-government sectors to progress health policy change in a meaningful and productive way.
