Senior Policy Advisor


Job Description:

  • Full-time, Fixed Term position until December 2023
  • Salary Level HEW 8 + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements
  • Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University
About You
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Government and Stakeholder Relations, you will be responsible for the analysis of existing, new and proposed public policy as well as assessing the ongoing impacts for RMIT University of these policies. You will also be responsible for the preparation of policy submissions to both state and federal governments.  
In addition, you will be responsible for the provision of advice and coordination across the university for a wide-range of public policy related matters. At times this will involve combining multiple sets of information and evidence to inform the development of new public policy positions or contributions, or to guide and inform the application of policy change across the university.
You will also handle a wide range of public policy matters on behalf of the Senior Manager, Government and Stakeholder Relations, including undertaking detailed research and data analytics to inform senior-level decision making. 
To be successful in this position, you’ll have:
  • A tertiary qualification and/or equivalent level of professional expertise gained through experience in a similar position.
  • Excellent writing skills, including a demonstrated ability to produce insightful policy recommendations, clear and concise summaries and briefing materials.
  • Proficient knowledge of the public policy context that RMIT operates in and the ability to use this to inform proposals, public policy analyses and executive briefing.
  • A proven ability to effectively coordinate input from a wide range of stakeholders to inform policy materials, in a mature and efficient manner.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills – in writing and verbally – to internal and external stakeholders with a demonstrated level of judgement and discretion. 
  • Be proficient in the range and specifics of the public policy environment that RMIT engages with and be able to assess the potential implications of policy changes for RMIT. 
  • Demonstrated experience in combining multiple sets of information and evidence to inform clear and concise public policy materials.
  • A working knowledge of legislative procedure and process at state and federal levels would be an advantage.
About the Portfolio
The Policy, Strategy and Impact (PSI) Portfolio provides focus and momentum for the projects and priorities that were identified in Ready for Life and Work: RMIT’s Strategic Plan, developed in 2015.
PSI works to support and advance the implementation of RMIT’s strategic priorities, including through public policy and government relations, strategy projects, innovative partnerships and capability development.
PSI includes diverse teams such as the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, the Ngarara Willim Centre, the Australian APEC Study Centre, the Future Social Service Institute, the Health Transformation Lab and the Centre for Innovative Justice.  
The portfolio works as a network of collaborative and inclusive teams, working to develop and extend an ‘impact ecosystem’ of relationships and partnerships across and beyond the university PSI teams provide a distinctive set of evidence-driven, innovation, public policy and community engagement expertise.
