RMIT exists to create transformative experiences for our students, getting them ready for life and work. You will be a part of a productive and collaborative team, who values working relationships and outcomes through open and inclusive planning, continuous information sharing and transparent work practices.
About You
Under the direction of the Technical Coordinator, you will be responsible for ensuring safe day to day operational functions within the laboratory spaces supported by the Chemistry & Life Sciences Technical Services Team, by providing technical support to teaching and research activities within those laboratories. This is a practical hands-on role, which will see you provide technical support to users of the spaces and ensure designated areas are running effectively and safely, in compliance with legislative requirements and RMIT policies and procedures. Setting up and preparing for undergraduate practical classes to ensure smooth delivery is an integral part of this position and will make up a very significant percentage of work in this role, as is the cleaning of used materials, equipment & laboratories, and the decontamination & disposal of waste. Experience in a higher-education research support role, while not required, would be considered favourably.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

* Significant experience preparing and supporting undergraduate practical classes, with particular emphasis on microbiology, cell and tissue culture and molecular biology, while also having competency in broader biology and chemistry fields.
* The ability to work individually as well as collaboratively in a team and be open to assisting others to meet team commitments and obligations.
* Competence and comfort in handling animals (live or dead) and/or animal tissues (desirable but not essential).
* Experience handling and processing biohazardous waste material.
* Flexibility to accommodate variable starting and finishing times to cope with fluctuating needs and peak workloads.
* A valid Victorian drivers licence.
* Proven track record of building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including understanding and embracing a client focused framework.
* Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation with knowledge of other field or industry regulations or standards related to the field within the scope of the service area.
* Effective oral, written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and with a diverse range of people from various backgrounds.
* Demonstrated experience and understanding of working in accordance with the RMIT value statements or similar frameworks in other organisations.
* A commitment to RMIT's policies of supporting a diverse workplace along with zero tolerance towards harassment, bullying or discrimination in any form.

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children Check.
