The Opportunity:
The National Indigenous Australians Agency (the NIAA) Legal Services Branch provides the full suite of government legal services to the NIAA. Our services include provision of legal advice on a range of corporate law, commercial law, and public law matters, development of legislation, management of litigation, and procurement of specialist legal advice when necessary.

We are seeking to recruit at least one experienced and talented lawyer to join our practice as a Principal Lawyer to lead in one of the following teams:
  • The Corporate Law Team advises on a range of NIAA matters, including on information law (we are responsible for coordination of NIAA FOI matters), intellectual property, employment law, Public Interest Disclosure, procurements, MoUs, contracts, and finance law.
  • The Commercial Law Team also advises on a range of NIAA matters, predominantly related to commercial law, statutory interpretation, legislation development and litigation arising in relation to grant and procurement arrangements.
  • The Land and Public Law Team assists with the development and interpretation of legislation, litigation, land and leasing, Indigenous land rights and native title, drafting of legal instruments, appointments, delegations, administrative law and lawful decision making, assistance with developing legal frameworks to implement policy proposals and regulatory and criminal law.The position is based in Canberra; however, you may be required to travel to support the NIAA’s Regional Network and its business in various locations outside Canberra. You will be joining a high performing government legal practice within the NIAA Corporate Division, reporting to the Chief Lawyer.
  • Please note: It is expected that a merit pool will be established as a part of this recruitment process, which may be used to fill any further Principal Lawyer roles that become vacant in Legal Services Branch prior to the expiry of the merit pool.
Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will possess:
  • Capacity to attain cultural competency, including the ability to understand issues affecting, and to communicate effectively with, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Strong technical legal and analytical skills, excellent communication and collaboration skills, and experience in providing high quality legal services on government legal issues.
  • High quality judgement and success in building and maintaining professional relationships, including with senior clients and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead a team, supervise and develop less experienced team members to cultivate and promote the legal practice, and to maintain professional skills. • Preferably, experience in the provision of legal services in relevant fields for this position, such as employment law and information law.
  • At least 5 years PAE is highly desirable.
