First Nations Community Development Worker (Taree)

This is an exciting opportunity for a First Nations Social Worker advocate, who is passionate about providing effective support and services to the community.


Are you someone who is passionate about making a difference in your community? We have an opportunity for you to work with mob on Biripi country to create good working relationships. This role will allow your networking and relationship building skills to shine by building close networks with key people and elders. Be a part of the change by becoming part of the referral networks that operate in the communities to ensure improved, engaged, and inclusive services to First Nations people.

Working within a dynamic First Nations team across all our regions this role will work collaboratively to build internal education programs. We provide cultural supervision to all our First Nations staff with a supervisor who is culturally aware.

Duties will include:

  • Assist First Nations people to access Interrelate services through creating good working relationships, establishing referral pathways, developing innovative strategies, networking and promotion and enhancement of Interrelate Services.
  • Identify community needs for building stronger family relationships including support after relationship breakdowns, supporting parenting arrangements, counselling for couples and individuals, youth mental health support, family group conferencing and many more
  • Organise group seminars, community events, forums, expo’s and workshops to support First Nations families through the challenges of their relationships 
  • Facilitate Aboriginal Building Connections training for community
  • Case Management Support

This role will be primarily based in Taree and may be required to travel and work across multiple sites including Port Macquarie, as well as other locations to support the community needs in the Mid North Coast region. Due to the travel required for this role, when a pool car is not available it will require the use of your own personal vehicle. All kilometres will be reimbursed when using your own personal vehicle. You are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and stay up to date with vaccines to comply with Interrelate’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.

This role is a permanent part-time role working 22.5 hours per week with an hourly rate of $41.75 per hour - $46.39 per hour (dependent on qualifications and experience).

Job Requirements:

  1. Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander background (Interrelate considers that being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification under section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW)
  2. Experience in community work / family mediation; particularly with First Nations Families and children and/or qualifications / certificates in Community Development, social science, social work or related fields.
  3. Experience in Case Management or willingness to develop skills.
  4. Understanding of social issues affecting First Nations communities within the local region
  5. Experience in consulting with the First Nations community and relevant stakeholders
  6. Understanding of the impact of family separation and breakdown on children with particular emphasis within First Nations families
  7. Experience in developing community programs or willingness to develop skills in creating and evaluating programs and services
