Technical Officer - Process Chemistry and Environmental


Job Description:

Full-time, Continuing position

* Salary HEW 6 + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements

* Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University

About You
Under the guidance of the Technical Coordinator, the technical officer will be responsible for overseeing and maintaining the day-to-day operational functions of laboratories/spaces and providing support to teaching and research activities and external projects within the process chemistry and environmental engineering laboratories.

The successful candidate must be able to apply a fundamental understanding of a broad range of equipment in the Environmental and/or Chemical Engineering field and must have the ability to troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis on equipment and process failures in a timely manner.

This position will suit the most driven Engineers who are hands-on, solution orientated and have proven relevant experience in Environmental and/or Chemical Engineering. The technical officer will be actively involved in all areas of process chemistry and environmental technical team activities including but not limited to supporting the enhancement, adoption, and implementation of OHS standards, while ensuring the delivery of client-centric, professional service.

The technical officer will be responsible for preparing for and supporting teaching, research, and industry activities that take place within the laboratories and workspaces. The incumbent will be expected to prepare for, support and attend field trips. The incumbent may be required to coordinate operations in one or more spaces.

Key Selection Criteria - To be successful in this position, you'll have as a minimum:

* Demonstrated experience and technical knowledge in commissioning, operation, maintenance, and training of various equipment in Environmental Engineering or related Engineering as well as proven ability to identify and implement improvements where needed.

* Proven knowledge and experience working within a laboratory setting of a relative scientific area or field.

* Proven laboratory operations and maintenance experience preferably in a teaching or research environment.

* Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation with knowledge of other field or industry regulations or standards related to the field within the scope of the service area.

* Proven initiative and problem-solving skills, highly organised and the ability to work autonomously and in a team.

* Effective oral, written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross- functional teams and with a diverse range of people from various backgrounds.

* Demonstrated experience and understanding of working in accordance with the RMIT value statements or similar frameworks in other organisations.

* A commitment to RMIT's policies of supporting a diverse workplace along with zero tolerance towards harassment, bullying or discrimination in any form.

* Proven mechanical capabilities and technical expertise in Engineering.

* Demonstrated experience in handling wastewater, sludges, biosolids and soil remediation

* Strong time and project management skills with the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced changing environment


* Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Engineering, Geochemistry, Mining Engineering or related Engineering degree.
