The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to shape the NIAA’s safety culture by working closely with our leaders. You will have opportunities to drive improvements to our Work Health Safety (WSH) practices, with a focus on supporting our staff based in regional and remote Australia.
The WHS Director leads a team of WHS professionals (who are based across Australia) to deliver NIAA's Workplace Health and Safety work program, providing strategic direction and leveraging expertise to ensure quality outcomes are delivered. The role fosters teamwork and encourages wider collaboration and information sharing to achieve results for the branch and broader NIAA objectives.
The role is responsible for:
- Overseeing all aspects of the NIAA's WHS program encompassing effective administration of WHS frameworks, safe and sustainable workplace practices and risk identification and prevention. This includes reporting to relevant government agencies and regulators (including Comcare).
- Ensuring the Agency's WHS program is compliant with the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act, Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations, other codes and standards that support a safe workplace.
- Overseeing all aspects of the NIAA's WHS risk management approach to identify, manage and report on WHS risk and to address realised issues, at a portfolio level and across work programs and projects.
- Ensuring the development and delivery of WHS related training and education to all staff, relevant stakeholders and partners.
- Providing a strategic level of specialist expertise and advice to the NIAA Executive, including through NIAA Committees.

- Have excellent communication skills
- Strong people management skills with a commitment to develop team members’ skills and proactively manage performance issues
- Promote and demonstrate the APS values and code of conduct, as well as the NIAA values and behaviours. This includes fostering respect and inclusion in the workplace
- Be able to work in a culturally-sensitive manner, with a commitment to furthering cultural capability development.
