The Opportunity:

The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) is working with communities to bring the Uluru Statement from the Heart to life. This is an exciting time to be working at the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) and work in genuine partnership to enable First Nations communities.

We are looking for motivated people to fill roles in the engagement teams in Brisbane, Longreach, Toowoomba, Cairns, Townsville and Mt Isa in Queensland, and Batemans Bay, Nowra and Wagga Wagga in the NSW region.

Regional teams offer challenging, interesting and stimulating work, engaging across all levels of government and working directly with communities. The North Queensland and South Queensland Regions have responsibility for sub regions that span from far north Queensland to southeast Queensland and include remote and regional centres across the west of Queensland. The Eastern NSW and Western NSW Regions have responsibility for sub regions that span from the North Coast of NSW, Southern NSW, the ACT including the Jervis Bay Territory and the Western Riverina, Central West and the Murdi Paaki Region.

The occupants of these roles will work on implementing and delivering a range of government initiatives and commitments that support and improve the well-being of First Nations People.

This role includes:

• developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships with key First Nations organisations and government bodies
• collaboration and negotiation with a range of internal and external stakeholders to achieve outcomes and build strong ties with communities
• providing considered, high-quality advice, drawn from diverse sources, including drafting Ministerial briefings and correspondence, and providing quality assurance services
• identifying emerging opportunities or issues and responding quickly to competing priorities as they emerge
• leading a small team to deliver the NIAA's work program within the Agency's Key Performance Measures and quality indicators
• conducting research and analysis on complex matters within area of expertise
• this role will require you to have a driver’s licence.

Please note there is no relocation package associated with this position.

Additionally, the candidate will have:

• high levels of cultural competency and experience in relation to First Nations matters
• experience working with different levels of government or other significant stakeholder groups such as First Nations organisations, education entities or non-government organisations
• flexibility and ability to adapt to change, good judgement, and some political nous
• strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills
• a general understanding of IT systems and MS applications
• excellent written and verbal communication skills to support the promotion and explanation of the Government’s agenda
• effectively supervise staff and provide constructive management with a focus on capability development, team building and leadership.
